Compulsory Basic Training
Your Starting Point
You'll find below exactly what will be required of you on your CBT. Here at DSM you'll have plenty of time to get to grips with it all, and if you (or we) feel that you haven't achieved a satisfactory level of confidence at the end of your first day, you just keeping coming back until everyone's happy!
The Legal Situation
Most learner motorcyclists must successfully complete a CBT course before riding any motorcycle on the road. This includes pre-December 1990 full car (and provisional moped) licence holders who have previously been exempt from this requirement. CBT certificates issued after 30 June 1996 are valid for three years only, certificates issued prior to this will remain valid until 1 July 1999, regardless of the actual date the training was completed. For provisional motorcycle licence holders failure to complete the full test within two years of their motorcycle licence being issued will result in a mandatory one year ban, during which they may ride a moped, and after which they must complete another CBT course. Full car licence holders incur no such penalty, but must repeat the CBT training every three years.
The only exemption from CBT are those who hold a full moped entitlement as a result of passing a moped test or a full motorcycle licence. Riders without a current CBT certificate will almost certainly be riding without a licence and insurance, and thus committing an offence punishable by a licence penalty endorsement from 9 to 14 points (12 points meaning an almost certain disqualification). What It Involves
